Halong Bay for Muslim Travellers

Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site of more than a thousand limestone islands and islets, is the highlight of any northern Vietnam trip. Here is how Muslim travellers can enjoy it with halal meals.

Why Visit Halong Bay as a Muslim Traveller?

Halong Bay (Vịnh Hạ Long) in Quang Ninh province is Vietnam’s most famous natural wonder: well over a thousand jungle-topped limestone islands rising from emerald water in the Gulf of Tonkin. UNESCO listed the bay in 1994 and, in 2023, extended the site to include the Cat Ba archipelago next door, which is why it is now called Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago.

For Muslim travellers the scenery is the easy part; food and prayer need planning. Most boats cook pork and serve alcohol from shared kitchens, and Quang Ninh has no mosque. The good news: three overnight cruises hold Halal Vietnam (HVN) certificates, a fourth runs a dedicated halal kitchen, and Bai Chay has two halal restaurants we have checked. This page brings together what to see, what it costs and how to keep every meal halal.

  • Distance: about 2.5 hours from Hanoi by expressway; the cruise port is Tuan Chau.
  • Bay fee: 250,000 VND per person for a day route; overnight routes cost more. Our tours and cruises include it.
  • Halal options: halal cruises and halal restaurants in Ha Long.
  • Mosque: none in Quang Ninh; the nearest is Al-Noor Mosque in Hanoi.

Top Things to Do in Halong Bay for Muslim Travellers

1. Cruise Overnight Among the Islands

Waking up among the karsts is the highlight of any trip to northern Vietnam. One night is the minimum; two nights reach the quieter corners of Lan Ha Bay. As of October 2026, Lyra Grandeur, Catherine and Diana hold HVN Muslim Friendly Service certificates. Mon Chéri runs a dedicated halal kitchen and has held an HVN restaurant certificate since 2018; its renewal is in progress, so we confirm the current certificate before you book. Halal meals must be ordered when you book, never on the day.

2. Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave

One of the largest caves in the bay, on Bo Hon Island, with two huge chambers of stalactites reached by a stepped path. It sits on Route 2, the route most cruises follow. Wear shoes with grip; the steps can be wet. Women in long skirts may find loose trousers easier on the stairs.

3. Ti Top Island Viewpoint

A few hundred steps lead to a lookout over the bay and the cruise anchorage; below is a small beach. The climb is steep but short. Swimwear is common on the beach, so families who prefer modest surroundings often go straight up to the viewpoint and back.

4. Kayaking or Bamboo Boat at Luon Cave

A low tunnel through the rock opens into a lagoon enclosed by cliffs, where monkeys are sometimes seen. Kayaks and rowing boats are included on most overnight cruises; life jackets are provided and modest swim or sports clothing is fine.

5. Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island

South of Halong, Lan Ha Bay has the same scenery with fewer boats, small sandy beaches and Viet Hai village inside Cat Ba National Park. It belongs to Hai Phong city and its fee is normally included in cruise prices. Cat Ba has no verified halal restaurant, so eat on board.

6. Bai Tu Long Bay

North-east of the main bay and next to the UNESCO area, Bai Tu Long is quieter still, with fishing villages and fewer cruises. It suits travellers who want calm water and space for prayer on deck.

7. Ha Long City: Bai Chay, Sun World and the Queen Cable Car

On land, Bai Chay is the tourist side of Ha Long City, with the beach promenade, Sun World Ha Long and the Queen Cable Car crossing the bay to a hilltop park with a giant Ferris wheel. Food inside the park is not halal, so eat at a halal restaurant in Bai Chay before or after. Map

Halong Bay Sights at a Glance: Fees and Hours (2026)

Sight Hours Fee Muslim tip
Halong Bay day route (Route 1 or 2) 06:30–18:30 250,000 VND per person Order a halal lunch with the boat in advance
Overnight cruise, Route 2 1 or 2 nights 550,000 VND (1 night) / 750,000 VND (2 nights) Choose a certified cruise
Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island Daytime, on Route 2 Included in the bay fee Steps; wear shoes with grip
Lan Ha Bay Cruise schedule Usually included in cruise price No halal food on Cat Ba; eat on board
Sun World Ha Long / Queen Cable Car Varies by season Paid separately Food in the park is not halal

Bay fees are set by the Quang Ninh People’s Committee and published by the Ha Long Bay Management Board; a port fee is charged on top. Prices can change, so we confirm them in every quotation.

Halal Food in Halong Bay

Almost all halal dining is in Bai Chay. Our checked list of halal restaurants in Ha Long puts RedCoral Halong Indian Halal Restaurant first (certified, with a prayer space) and Sri Rembau, a Malaysian kitchen in Cai Lan, second. It also explains which Indian restaurants use halal meat but serve alcohol, and which once-popular places have closed. Map

  • Fresh seafood is everywhere, but most seafood restaurants also cook pork and serve beer.
  • Shared day boats do not have certified halal kitchens; on our Halong Muslim tour 1 day lunch is arranged in advance.
  • Tuan Chau and Cat Ba have very limited halal food, so bring snacks from Hanoi or Bai Chay.

Mosque and Prayer in Halong Bay

There is no mosque in Quang Ninh province. The nearest is Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street in Hanoi, the only mosque in northern Vietnam. On board, pray in your cabin or ask the crew for a quiet space on deck; RedCoral in Bai Chay has a prayer space. Ha Long uses the same time zone as Hanoi and prayer times differ by only a few minutes.

How to Get to Halong Bay

  • By private car: about 2.5 hours from Hanoi on the expressway, with a halal lunch stop if needed. This is how our guests travel.
  • By limousine van or bus: shuttles leave from the Old Quarter for Tuan Chau and Bai Chay.
  • From Van Don Airport: about 50 minutes by road to Bai Chay.

How Many Days in Halong Bay?

A day trip from Hanoi is possible but spends about five hours on the road. One night on a cruise is the most popular choice; two nights let you explore Lan Ha Bay at a slower pace. Many guests combine the bay with Hanoi and Ninh Binh on our 3-day Hanoi, Tam Coc and Halong Bay tour or the 4-day version.

Best Time to Visit Halong Bay

March to May and September to November bring the calmest seas and clearest skies. June to August is hot and is also storm season, when the port authority can cancel sailings at short notice. December to February is cool and often misty, which gives the bay a dramatic look.
