Hanoi for Muslim Travellers

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital for more than 1,000 years, is the easiest city in northern Vietnam for Muslim travellers: Al-Noor Mosque, halal restaurants in the Old Quarter and short trips to Halong Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa.

Why Visit Hanoi as a Muslim Traveller?

Hanoi is the easiest starting point in northern Vietnam for Muslim travellers. The capital has the region’s only mosque, Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street, a growing choice of halal restaurants in the Old Quarter, and fast road links to Halong Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa. Most sights are within 3 km of each other, so a private guide can fit two or three of them and a halal lunch into one comfortable day.

  • Prayer: Al-Noor Mosque (opened 1890) holds the five daily prayers and Jumu’ah, with a separate women’s area.
  • Halal food: certified-halal and Muslim-run kitchens serving Vietnamese, Indian, Pakistani, Malay, Indonesian and Middle Eastern dishes.
  • Compact sightseeing: the mausoleum, Temple of Literature, Imperial Citadel and Old Quarter are 10–15 minutes apart by car.
  • Gateway to the north: halal-certified Halong Bay cruises, Ninh Binh boat trips and Sapa’s rice terraces all start from Hanoi.

Top Things to Do in Hanoi for Muslim Travellers

These are the sights our guests ask for most, with the practical details that matter on a Muslim-friendly day. All of them are included or can be added on our Hanoi City Muslim Tour 1 Day.

1. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Ba Dinh Square

The granite memorial where President Ho Chi Minh lies in state. Free entry, mornings only on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday (summer 7:30–10:30, winter 8:00–11:00, 30 minutes longer at weekends). It closes every Monday and Friday and for annual maintenance, in 2026 from 4 September to 2 November. Cover shoulders and knees; the hijab is welcome and only hats come off. Map

2. Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple

The lake at the heart of Hanoi is free to walk around day and night, and the car-free walking street runs from Friday evening to Sunday night. The island temple, reached by the red Huc Bridge, costs 50,000 VND (under-16s free) and opens about 7:00–18:00, until 21:00 at weekends; entering it is optional. Al-Noor Mosque is about 1 km away. Map

3. The Old Quarter and Al-Noor Mosque

The “36 Streets” merchant district is free to explore and home to Al-Noor Mosque, 12 Hang Luoc Street, built with funds raised in 1885 by Indian Muslim merchants from Bombay. Most of the city’s halal restaurants are a few minutes’ walk away, which makes the western Old Quarter the best place for Muslim families to stay.

4. Temple of Literature

Vietnam’s first university (1070–1076), with five walled courtyards and 82 stone stelae of doctoral graduates. 70,000 VND (students 35,000 VND, under-16s free), open daily 8:00–17:00. Shoulders and knees covered; the shrine courtyard can be admired from outside. Certified-halal lunch is available nearby on Le Duan Street. Map

5. Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

A UNESCO World Heritage Site (2010) of royal gates, palace foundations and a wartime bunker. 100,000 VND (under-16s free), open daily 8:00–17:00, a 10-minute walk from the mausoleum. No rituals on the route, and plenty of space for children.

6. Hoa Lo Prison

The French “Maison Centrale”, later the “Hanoi Hilton”, now a museum of the colonial era and the American war. 50,000 VND (under-16s free), open daily 8:00–17:00. The cell and guillotine rooms are graphic, so it suits teenagers and adults better than young children. Map

7. Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

The best introduction to Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups, including the Cham, the community behind much of Vietnam’s Islamic heritage, with a garden of full-size traditional houses. 40,000 VND, Tuesday–Sunday 8:30–17:30, closed Mondays; about 8 km west of the centre.

8. West Lake and Tran Quoc Pagoda

Hanoi’s largest lake is ideal for a sunset walk or drive, and the Xuan Dieu area on its shore has several Middle Eastern and South Asian halal restaurants.

9. Water Puppet Show

A 50-minute show of traditional water puppetry beside Hoan Kiem Lake, popular with children; tickets cost about 100,000–200,000 VND. Live music plays throughout, so families who avoid music may prefer the lakeside walk instead.

Halal Food in Hanoi

Hanoi has a good choice of halal and Muslim-run restaurants serving Vietnamese favourites such as beef pho and spring rolls, as well as Indian, Pakistani, Malay, Indonesian, Palestinian and Egyptian dishes. Most are in the Old Quarter around Al-Noor Mosque, with more on Xuan Dieu Street by West Lake. See our ranked list of halal restaurants in Hanoi, checked one by one with Tripadvisor ratings and Google Maps links.

  • Street stalls usually cook with pork stock or lard; ask your guide before eating outside a halal restaurant.
  • Some Indian restaurants use halal meat but serve alcohol; our list marks which ones.
  • Fresh fruit, coconut water and Vietnamese coffee are easy Muslim-friendly snacks anywhere.

Mosque and Prayer Facilities in Hanoi

Al-Noor Mosque (12 Hang Luoc Street, Hoan Kiem) is the only mosque in Hanoi and northern Vietnam. It opened in 1890, holds the five daily prayers and Friday Jumu’ah, and has a separate area for women. During Ramadan the community serves iftar at the mosque every evening. Learn more about the local community in Muslims in Hanoi.

Outside the mosque, most travellers pray at their hotel; the qibla from Hanoi is roughly west-north-west. Noi Bai International Airport has a prayer room in Terminal 2.

How to Get to Hanoi

  • By air: Noi Bai International Airport is about 30 km north of the centre, 40–60 minutes by car. Direct flights connect Hanoi with Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul and many other cities.
  • Within Vietnam: frequent flights from Ho Chi Minh City (about 2 hours) and Da Nang (about 1 hour 15 minutes).
  • Visa: most nationalities can apply for an e-visa online, and citizens of several ASEAN countries enter visa-free; check the rules for your passport before booking.

How Many Days in Hanoi?

Two full days cover the city’s main sights; add one day each for Halong Bay and Ninh Binh, or two to three days for Sapa. Popular private itineraries are the Hanoi Muslim Tour 4 Days, 5 Days, 6 Days and 7 Days; compare them all in our Hanoi Muslim tour packages.

Best Time to Visit Hanoi

October to December and March to April are the most pleasant months, mild and fairly dry. Winter (December to February) is cool and often grey at about 15–20°C, while summer (May to September) is hot and humid with heavy showers. During Ramadan halal restaurants stay open, several serve iftar, and Al-Noor Mosque holds tarawih prayers.
