Fansipan Mountain: Cable Car to the Roof of Indochina – Guide (2026)
Is Fansipan worth it? Yes, on a clear day. Fansipan (3,143 m) is the highest mountain in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, the “Roof of Indochina”. A mountain train from Sun Plaza in Sapa town and a record-breaking cable car of about 6.3 km bring you close to the summit in under an hour, followed by about 600 steps or a short funicular. A round-trip cable car ticket is about 850,000 VND per adult in 2026. Allow half a day and bring warm clothes.
Why Visit Fansipan
- Stand on the highest point of Indochina without a multi-day climb.
- The cable car holds two Guinness World Records, including a 1,410 m height difference between stations.
- Sea of clouds views over the Hoang Lien Son range on clear mornings.
- Easy to combine with Sapa town and Cat Cat Village in one day.

How to Reach the Summit
1. Muong Hoa Mountain Train
Opened in 2019, the train runs from Sun Plaza across the valley to the cable car station, with views of the terraces.
2. Fansipan Cable Car
Opened on 2 February 2016, the three-rope cable car climbs 1,410 m in about 15 minutes, often passing through clouds.
3. Steps or Funicular to the Summit
From the upper station, walk about 600 steps or take the short Do Quyen funicular to the summit marker.
What Muslim Travellers Should Know
- The path from the upper station passes a large Buddhist spiritual complex with pagodas and statues; the funicular lets you skip most of it.
- Food on the mountain is not halal. A restaurant near the cable car station is promoted as halal; confirm before you go, or eat on Thac Bac Street before and after.
- There is no prayer room; pray in town before or after the trip.
- Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a scarf or hijab layer, even in summer.
- Sapa has several Muslim-run halal restaurants on Thac Bac Street, a short walk from the town centre, and some have a prayer room. See our guide to halal restaurants in Sapa.
Best Time to Go
Clear views are most likely from October to December and in March–April. Go early, as clouds often build after midday. In winter, frost or occasional snow can make the summit very cold.
