Tam Coc, Ninh Binh: Boat Trip, Tickets & Halal Lunch Guide (2026)

Is Tam Coc worth visiting? Yes. Tam Coc, meaning “three caves”, is a 1.5–2 hour rowing-boat ride along the Ngo Dong River through rice fields and three river caves, framed by limestone peaks. It is one of the most beautiful landscapes in northern Vietnam, about 2 hours from Hanoi, and the boat ride is gentle enough for all ages. Tam Coc village also has the area’s best-known halal-friendly restaurant, which makes it the easiest base for Muslim travellers in Ninh Binh.

Why Tam Coc Is a Must-See in Ninh Binh

  • A classic “Halong Bay on land” landscape of rice fields and karst peaks.
  • Golden rice fields in late May and early June are among Vietnam’s most photographed scenes.
  • Easy access: the pier is in the village, with cycling lanes all around.
  • A halal-friendly lunch is a short walk from the pier.

What to See at Tam Coc

1. The Three Caves

Hang Ca (about 127 m, the longest), Hang Hai and Hang Ba are low river caves; the rowers often paddle with their feet.

2. Rice Fields of the Ngo Dong River

Green from March, golden at harvest in late May–early June, then flooded again in summer.

3. Bich Dong Pagoda

A 15th-century pagoda built on three levels into a mountainside, a short ride from the pier. It is a Buddhist site; you can admire the setting from outside.

4. Thai Vi Temple

Built in 1258 under King Tran Thai Tong, reachable by a side trip from the river.

5. Cycling the Villages

Flat lanes around Tam Coc and Bich Dong are perfect for an easy bicycle ride before or after lunch.

Tips for Muslim Travellers

  • Halal options are few: Aroma Indian Restaurant in Tam Coc is Muslim-owned and serves halal meat (alcohol is also served), and a family-run halal restaurant operates near Ninh Binh Railway Station. Details are in our guide to halal restaurants in Ninh Binh.
  • There is no mosque in Ninh Binh; the nearest is Al-Noor Mosque in Hanoi, about two hours away. Pray at your restaurant, hotel or a quiet place your guide arranges, and bring a light prayer mat.
  • Wear a hat and modest, light clothing; there is little shade on the boat.
  • Visiting pagodas and temples is optional; you can wait at the pier or enjoy the fields.

Tam Coc or Trang An?

Tam Coc is shorter, flatter and best at rice season; Trang An is longer, with more caves and temples, and is the core of the UNESCO-listed Trang An Landscape Complex. On a day trip one boat ride is enough; choose Tam Coc in May–June and Trang An the rest of the year.
