Mua Cave (Hang Mua): The Best Viewpoint in Ninh Binh – Climb Guide (2026)

Is Mua Cave worth the climb? Yes, if you can manage stairs. Nearly 500 stone steps (often quoted as 486) lead from Mua Cave to the Lying Dragon ridge, with the best panorama of Tam Coc’s rice fields and the Ngo Dong River. The climb takes 20–30 minutes each way. From 1 April 2026 the ticket is 150,000 VND per person. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat.

Why Climb Mua Cave

  • A stone dragon sculpture follows the ridge, giving the site its nickname.
  • Lotus ponds at the foot bloom from about June to August.

What to See at Mua Cave

1. The Lying Dragon Ridge

At the top, a stone dragon winds along the rocks. The left peak has the famous view of Tam Coc; the right peak has a small shrine and a view of the lotus ponds.

2. Mua Cave Itself

The small cave at the foot of the mountain gave the site its name; legend links it to a dancing (“mua”) performance for a Tran-dynasty king.

3. Lotus Ponds

In summer, the ponds at the foot are covered in pink lotus, popular for photos.

Tips for Muslim Travellers

  • Wear comfortable shoes and loose, modest clothing; the steps are steep.
  • Bring water; there is little shade on the climb.
  • Halal options are few: Aroma Indian Restaurant in Tam Coc is Muslim-owned and serves halal meat (alcohol is also served), and a family-run halal restaurant operates near Ninh Binh Railway Station. Details are in our guide to halal restaurants in Ninh Binh.
  • There is no mosque in Ninh Binh; the nearest is Al-Noor Mosque in Hanoi, about two hours away. Pray at your restaurant, hotel or a quiet place your guide arranges, and bring a light prayer mat.
