Ninh Binh for Muslim Travellers
Ninh Binh, two hours south of Hanoi, is known as "Halong Bay on land": limestone peaks, rice fields and river caves explored by rowing boat. Here is how Muslim travellers can plan a halal-friendly visit.
Why Visit Ninh Binh as a Muslim Traveller?
Ninh Binh, about two hours south of Hanoi, is where rivers wind between limestone peaks, rice fields and cave temples. Its core, the Trang An Landscape Complex, became Vietnam’s first mixed natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, and Hoa Lu was the country’s capital from 968 to 1010.
For Muslim travellers, Ninh Binh is one of the easiest day trips from Hanoi. Two restaurants near Hoa Lu and Trang An hold Halal Vietnam (HVN) certificates, the sightseeing is outdoors and unhurried, and you can be back in Hanoi for Maghrib or for Jumu’ah at Al-Noor Mosque. This page covers what to see, 2026 ticket prices and where to eat halal.
- Distance: about 95 km, 2 hours by car from Hanoi.
- Top tickets 2026: Trang An boat 300,000 VND, Tam Coc boat 250,000 VND, Mua Cave 150,000 VND, Hoa Lu 20,000 VND.
- Halal food: halal restaurants in Ninh Binh, two of them certified.
- Mosque: none in Ninh Binh; the nearest is Al-Noor Mosque in Hanoi.
Top Things to Do in Ninh Binh for Muslim Travellers
1. Trang An Boat Trip
A small rowing boat carries a few passengers along the river, through low caves and past small temples, for two to three hours. Ticket: 300,000 VND per adult (from 1 January 2026), 150,000 VND for children 1–1.3 m; boats run from 07:00 with the last departure at 16:00. There are three routes; the boatwoman rows the whole way, and you can stay in the boat at temple stops. Bring a hat and water; there is little shade. Map
2. Tam Coc – Bich Dong
Often called “Ha Long Bay on land”, Tam Coc is a shorter boat ride on the Ngo Dong River through three caves, framed by rice fields that turn gold in late May–early June. Ticket: 250,000 VND per adult. Bich Dong Pagoda, a cave temple on the same ticket, can be skipped if you prefer. Tam Coc town has restaurants, but the best-known halal-labelled restaurant near the wharf also serves alcohol, so we arrange lunch in Hoa Lu instead. Map
3. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
The temples of King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh stand on the site of Vietnam’s 10th-century capital. Ticket: 20,000 VND. It is a short, shaded visit and an easy history lesson for children; the certified HTC Indian restaurant is next to the car park. Map
4. Mua Cave Viewpoint
Around 500 stone steps climb to a dragon sculpture with the classic view over Tam Coc’s river and fields. Ticket: 150,000 VND. Go early or late to avoid the heat; the climb is steep, so it suits fit travellers rather than the elderly. Long, loose clothing and trainers work well. Map
5. Bai Dinh Pagoda
A vast Buddhist complex with long corridors of statues. The grounds are free; the electric buggy costs 150,000 VND return. Visit as a sightseer, dress modestly, and skip it if you prefer to avoid temples.
6. Cycling and Van Long Nature Reserve
Flat lanes between the villages around Tam Coc are ideal for a slow bicycle ride. Van Long, a quiet wetland where langurs live on the cliffs, is reached by bamboo boat (100,000 VND) and is rarely crowded.
