Hoa Lo Prison Museum (Hanoi Hilton): History, Tickets & Visitor Tips (2026)
Is Hoa Lo Prison worth visiting? Yes, if you want to understand Vietnam’s 20th-century history. Built by the French at the end of the 19th century, Hoa Lo held Vietnamese revolutionaries and later American pilots, who nicknamed it the “Hanoi Hilton”. What remains is now a compact museum, open daily 08:00–17:00, with an adult ticket of 50,000 VND. A visit takes about an hour, and at roughly 1 km from Hoan Kiem Lake it is the closest of Hanoi’s major sights to Al-Noor Mosque.
Why Visit Hoa Lo Prison Museum
- It tells two stories in one place: French colonial repression and the Vietnam War.
- Original cells, shackles and a French guillotine make history very real.
- It is open every day, including weekends and Tet, so it suits any itinerary.
- It is a short walk from the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the mosque.

History of the “Hanoi Hilton”
The French built Maison Centrale between 1896 and 1901 on the site of Hoa Lo, a village of pottery kilns (the name means “fiery furnace”). Designed for about 460 prisoners, it held more than 2,000 by 1954, many of them leaders of the independence movement. From 5 August 1964 to 1973 it was used for American pilots shot down over North Vietnam, including the future US Senator John McCain. Most of the prison was demolished in the 1990s to make way for a high-rise; the gatehouse section and part of the cell blocks were kept as the museum.
What to See
1. The Gate and Prison Walls
The yellow gate with the words “Maison Centrale” and the thick walls topped with broken glass are the most recognisable part of the old prison.
2. Cells and Dungeons
Reconstructed communal cells with shackled figures and narrow solitary cells show the harsh conditions under French rule.
3. The Guillotine Room
The original French guillotine is displayed with the history of executions. It can be upsetting for younger visitors.
4. Escape Tunnel and Women’s Section
Exhibits tell the stories of prisoners who escaped through the sewer system and of the women held here.
5. The American Pilots Exhibition
Photos and personal objects from the 1964–1973 period, including John McCain’s flight suit, present the Vietnamese perspective on the “Hanoi Hilton” years.
