Hoan Kiem Lake: A Must-Visit Attraction in Hanoi – Guide for Muslim Travellers (2026)

Why visit Hoan Kiem Lake? Hoan Kiem Lake is the heart of Hanoi: a 12-hectare lake framed by trees, with the red The Huc Bridge leading to Ngoc Son Temple and the small Turtle Tower on its island. Walking around the lake is free at any hour and takes 30–40 minutes. It is also the most convenient landmark for Muslim travellers, because Al-Noor Mosque and many halal restaurants are within a 15-minute walk.

Why Hoan Kiem Lake Is a Must-See in Hanoi

  • It is the symbolic centre of the city and the starting point for the Old Quarter.
  • The legend of the returned sword gives the lake its name, the “Lake of the Returned Sword”.
  • Early mornings show local life: tai chi, dancing and joggers.
  • On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings the surrounding streets become a pedestrian zone.

The Legend of the Returned Sword

In the 15th century Emperor Le Loi used a magical sword to drive out the Ming invaders. Boating on the lake after victory, he met a giant Golden Turtle that took the sword back to its divine owner. The lake, once called Luc Thuy, has been known since then as Ho Hoan Kiem, the Lake of the Returned Sword. Giant soft-shell turtles really did live here; the last one died in January 2016 and is preserved, together with an earlier specimen, at Ngoc Son Temple.

What to See Around the Lake

1. The Huc Bridge

The bright red wooden bridge, added in 1865 by the scholar Nguyen Van Sieu, is Hanoi’s most photographed spot, especially at night when it is lit.

2. Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of the Jade Mountain)

On Jade Islet, the temple honours the scholar-god Van Xuong and General Tran Hung Dao, who defeated the Mongols in 1285 and 1288. It is an active shrine with statues and incense; the preserved turtles are in a side hall.

3. Pen Tower and Ink Slab

At the entrance to the bridge, the stone Pen Tower and the Ink Slab gate reflect the scholarly spirit of the temple.

4. Turtle Tower

Built in 1886 on a tiny islet in the middle of the lake, the moss-covered tower is the lake’s emblem. It cannot be visited, but is best seen from the east shore.

5. The Weekend Walking Street

From Friday evening to Sunday night, roads around the lake close to traffic. Families, street performers and games fill the area. Food stalls here are not halal.

Tips for Muslim Travellers

  • Al-Noor Mosque at 12 Hang Luoc Street is the nearest mosque, a 12–15 minute walk north of the lake through the Old Quarter.
  • Most of Hanoi’s halal restaurants are within walking distance; see our halal restaurants in Hanoi.
  • Ngoc Son Temple is a shrine with statues; you can enjoy the bridge and lake views without entering.
  • Benches and shady paths make the lake a good place to rest between prayers.

Best Time to Visit and Insider Tips

  • 06:00–07:00 for local life and cool air; sunset and evening for lights on The Huc Bridge.
  • Weekend evenings are lively but very crowded; keep an eye on bags.
  • Combine with the Old Quarter, Dong Xuan Market and Hoa Lo Prison, all within walking distance.
  • Water puppet shows run several times a day at the theatre on the north-east shore.
